The Olympic Flame in Vancouver, B.C.
Last week I was out in Vancouver, B.C. to soak up the spirit of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. Sadly no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t find a way to vlog well from any of the locations I was at. The Olympic spirit was really quite noisy to the point where my voice couldn’t be heard above the crowds.
While it’s unfortunate that I couldn’t take you with me on my journey I can tell you that what I saw when I was out there was incredible.
From my experiences out west, and following the games on TV there are two main themes that I find are mentioned more often than not. These themes are “We support our athletes” and “Hard work gets the job done”.
Showing Canadian Pride
From walking the streets in downtown Vancouver, to knowing that all venues are pretty much sold out, Canada is proud to be hosting the winter games. Our athletes have spoken at length about the support that they feel from the crowds of cheering fans, their sporting associations to their loving family and friends. They attribute part of their success to these factors. They have a support network that they know they can rely on.
In the world of business I believe that no one can make it on their own. Support teams are necessary every step along the way. Your team doesn’t need to be massive but it does need to be comprised of people you trust and respect. These people are a part of your team to tell you the truth even if it hurts. They provide encouragement and tools to help you soar to new heights. There is a good chance that if they are your support team, you return the favour to them as well.
As we all know athletes are strong willed and dedicated individuals. They are committed to training beyond all reason, sacrificing parts of their lives to achieve greatness. The ultimate goal is being a medal winner at an Olympic games but athletes know it is a long road and even personal bests are a great achievement as you start out playing in these games. Their commitment to sport, constant improvement, ability to overcome obstacles and great mental anguish in the face of adversity are qualities that I greatly admire in them.
I think my favourite quote so far from these games is from Jon Montgomery, the Gold Medal winner of Men’s Skeleton from Russell, Manitoba. Upon winning gold he told reporters;
“You gotta stay in a positive frame of mind and believe that the work you have put in to get you to this point is going to get you through and if you can rely on that you’ll have enough to pull through these hard moments at the top of the track…”
It is this mindframe that I believe athletes and enterpreneurs share. I have been an entrepreneur for over 7 years and I don’t think I know any other way to live than to try and be positive, work hard, know that tough times can happen but in the end success is inevitable.
I’m sure that when the games are complete there will be more lessons learned that can be applied from Olympic sport to business. I can’t wait to see what I learn next.
